Tis the season! Yes, the movies season! Well, nay season is movie season in my book. If you know me at all you know that I am a movie junkie born and bred by my movie junkie dad. I think I’ve talked about this before but it all started with 16 millimeter films played on a rented movie projector using our wall as a screen.
Our family memories have been intermingled with classic movies to the point we don’t know how to have a conversation without involving several movie quotes in the process. Just the other night, we were about to eat and my mom said, “Dad’s going to give the blessing on the food”. Immediately at least 5 of us yelled out “THE BLESSING!!”(Ten points if you can tell me the movie that’s from.) And, of course, we all bust up laughing as though it was the first time that joke was played (it happens almost every time we eat together and someone is asked to ‘give the blessing’).
I will quite often relate what someone is going through to a scene from a movie (or book), forgetting about the line between fiction and reality. I’ve even been known to reference R-rated films in my Sunday school class. “Staying away from sin and temptation is like Zombieland-you’re constantly running from the evil of zombies and you have to stay vigilant or the zombies, or sin, may eat you alive.”
It totally works.
Yes, I like movies. A lot.
This is why I have been troubled by the path our movies seem to be taking lately. It’s rare you find an original screenplays and fabulous plot lines. I would even go so far as to say that all the good writers have abandon the movie-ship for the ever growing talented TV-ship. You have shows like-The Office, 30Rock, Modern Family, The Closer, Dexter (I’ve never watched it but just the premise is brilliant!), United States of Tara (brilliant but vulgar, so I’ve only watched a few of them), Bones, House, Phineas and Ferb and, of course, Kate plus 8 and Sarah Palin’s Alaska.
Those last 2 were to see if you were paying attention. hehehe And yes, Phineas and Ferb does qualify.
And what does the movie industry keep giving us? Smurfs and Yogi Bear, dammit! Throw in a bunch of comic book movies and 4 more movies of aliens coming to annihilate the earth of all mankind and that is what you have to choose from. Some of the best movies happen to be based on novels but it’s still someone else’s writing. Where has originality gone? What has happened to movies like JAWS, Sixth Sense, Signs(yes, an alien movie but it wasn’t about the aliens at all), Juno? I know, there are some good ones out there but so many disappointing ones, too! Maybe I’m just missing all the good stuff cuz we don’t generally watch R-rated movies.
So, if you have seen a worthwhile film at the theater let me know. I’m needing a good day at the movies.
I’ll even buy the popcorn.

I agree that there is not much worth seeing lately and that originality seems to be a thing of the past. That being said, you should take your girls to see Tangled if you haven't already. That was a great show! I heard Tron was good but that's one of those remakes you're talking about.
Yeah, no R rated movies make it limited. One of my resolutions this year actually is going to do with watching more immoral movies. Yay 2011!!
Have you seen Despicable Me? It was original and funny and kinda breaks the mold. Saw Tangled today and it was good too.
What about iCarly? I find myself laughing at that lame show all the time. Phineus and Ferb is funny too.
They're just digging back into the eighties and making every hit show into a movie these days. Bleh.
I am personally into the Chronicles of Narnia series. They aren't highly rated, but the books were amazing, and the movies are pretty impressive. I love the music most. Enjoy!
Best one that has originality that I have seen as of late I am sure you have seen but I agree with you and that is the ONLY one I have seen lately that qualifies for originality is...drum roll please....Inception! Everything else...bleh....
Dustin and I just went to see "True Grit" last night. Ahh, I know, a remake of a John Wayne classic. But I venture to say, better than the original. Dont shoot me. Go see it. I bet you will agree. Its a western, of course. And I would not say I am a western movie fan by any means. The Coen brothers' did an excellent job though, strictly sticking to the original script and language of the time. No blockbuster shootout scenes either. Dare I say, "logical" killing; no excess. And great acting straight down the line. The plot is worthwhile and I found myself disappointed when the credits started to roll - only because it was over. I wanted the show to keep going. Why are there not more movies made with the substance this story carries?
I agree, it's harder and harder to find good movies that aren't rated R. We've been bad and have seen a few of the rated R's, simply because there wasn't much to choose from. We recently saw The Fighter, which is rated R, a lot of "F" bombs, but it was so good. I really liked The Next Three Days, which is only PG 13.
Anyway, I LOVED the 6th Sense, and Juno, those are seriously two movies that are in my top 5.
Oh, and I loved that you quoted rated R movies in your Sunday school class, that is so funny!
And it seems that the same plots are done over and over again...but this time in 3D ...SNORE! My favorite movie ... Sixth Sense ... and I have a developed a fondness for Phineus and Ferb
I am guilty of talking in movie lines too sometimes. lol. I recently took my girls to see Tangled and we all loved it. My 3 year old was so into it that at a sad part she was in my lap with her arms wrapped around my neck so tight I could barely breathe. I have had 2 friends tell me that "How do you know" was terrible. One of them walked out of the theater because they were so bored with it. Those are the only 2 movie theater movies that I really know anything about.
No movie recommendations from me. I typically avoid new releases. I can wait. I also don't go that often. I thought Avatar was great but I know that's old news. I don't think you can compare TV shows and movies very well because of the time limit and commercials.
I don't mean to play the devils advocate, but the new 'For the Strength of Youth' handbook (the only place where it actually said 'no R rated movies' stuff.....it no longer says anything about those pesky arbitrary ratings. Just sayin.
