Family Night is the ‘Bomb’!!

Family Home Evening is the joke my Heavenly Father plays on me every week. Sometimes I bow out just so I am not the butt of the never ending joke. Our lessons very rarely last more than 7 minutes and even that is too long for some. Tonight was a real treat. We used Pres. Monson’s message in the Friend which was also used in sharing time yesterday. I like to try to connect our lessons with the ones they have in primary if I (rarely) think about it.

Audrey read the message with my (very little) help while Annie was ‘brushing’ her hair. ElRey thought he could sneak in and finish brushing her hair for her since her idea of brushing is completely different from ours. As Audrey was reading this is what she was competing with:

Annie: OWOWOWSTOPITSTOPITOW IDON’TLIKEYOUOWOWI’LLDOITMYSELF!!!!!!!!!

After Audrey finished reading her part I asked, “what did we just read?”

“I don’t know…”

So I retold the story of the firm foundation of the roads in Canada.

Annie: Where is Canada?

Mom: Above our country, The United States.”

Annie (pauses): “So Canada is heaven?”

Mom: “Close, but no.”

I then tried to relate those firm foundations to our own spiritual foundations and how we need to make them strong with prayer, scriptures, serving etc. I then told them that part of serving is listening at church and obeying parents and being nice to our sisters.

Annie: “Well Audrey was being mean in the bath! She tattle-telled!”

Mom(trying to ignore outburst and overwhelming desire to teach my kids some more swear words): Annie, you are really good at sharing and trying to make everyone around you happy!

Audrey, you are always really good at obeying and doing what you are told!”

Annie (screaming): “I TRY TO LISTEN!! But…but…WAAAAHAHHHHH

I. Am. Done.

Dad: “Who wants to pray?”

Audrey and Annie: “Me! No me! You got to pick the song!! I want to!! You read the lesson!!”

Dad:”Annie only picked the song so she can say the prayer.”

This is when I thought it would be a good idea to finish (yes, it’s still not done!!) brushing Annie’s hair and the screaming ensues…..

Mom: “Annie, I am done. Do you want to say the prayer?”

Annie(laced with anger): “No, you do it!!”

F.H.E. has a special place in my heart…

Remember every little bit counts. You are teaching that it is important just by having FHE.

I think you might need a chart of some sort...LOL!

Oh, your FHE sounds so similar to mine. Normally Savannah yells about five times during the lesson, "Dad, let's WRESTLE!' And there is the constant arguing over who chose the song so now who gets to pray...it is just heartwarming. We do ours in the living room, I think just so I am nowhere near the knives. Better not to have the temptation. :) I love your stories, they are sooo awesome!

How funny we did the same lesson! However I feel blessed ours went more smoothly than yours. Yes, I am rubbing it in. ;-D (Love ya!) That being said we did have our moments particuarly when we were trying to sing. Sigh...

FHE at our house is so great. By the end of the lesson I have said more stop its, sit ups, knock it offs, and are you listenings, than teaching words combined. ahhhh. love it.

I'm sorry FHE is so hard! You did better than us though. Ours consisted of a trip to Wal-Mart to chase the boys up and down the isles and hear BJ teach a few words of his own to the boys. Our lesson for the night was "Make sure you have enough money in your account BEFORE you go grocery shopping to avoid making everyone standing in line behind you want to kill you as you have a "duh" look on your face wondering how you are going to pay for all of these groceries that you just worked so hard (with two naughty boys) to round up."

The moral of the story is: Just when you think life's hard, someone else's is probaby sucking even more!

Perhaps is we were at home really trying to do a structured FHE, we would have been more blessed! I get it...I think I'm catching on...

i've pretty much decided that every family activity that is supposedly meant to bring your family together, actually seems to do the opposite. for instance, hmm, family dinner anyone? church? fhe? i can go on, but they all pretty much stink and make me want to tear my hair out. but yeah, there are blessings to be had, one of which i'm sure is laughing when my grandchildren are giving my kids payback at the dinner table. mwhahaha!

You are supposed to use my book!! Then FHE won't have any episodes like that!

Wait, I thought Canada WAS heaven...maybe I'm thinking of the North Pole!! Someday, there will be special FHE blessings for us...I just know it...
