The Egg Hunt

Our chicken, Gabriella, got into the habit of laying eggs under the bottom stair of our deck. In an effort to stop this we have been trying to keep them in the coop area but with our 5 year-old that proves to be a difficult task. Needless to say we have been searching our yard for eggs for a little over a week. We were a little worried about why they wouldn’t be laying. Did they have enough water? Were they stressed about the new chicks? Have they been traumatized one too many times by our children? Is this the beginning of a Hitchcock themed bird attack, first they stop giving us eggs and next they are gouging out our eyes!

Today I went out to check their water and food and although they were locked up in their cage, I could not see Chicken. I saw something out of the corner of my eye and there she was under the coop. We had covered the gap with chicken wire but they had somehow breeched the system and found a way in there.IMG_0928

When we first got them we couldn’t find eggs than either and then ElRey was cleaning out the compost pile that was under there and found a bunch of eggs which is why we had it gated off. So when I saw Chicken under there, she knew the jig was up. I could see it in her beady little eye. I bent down and this is what I found in that corner:

17 eggs! Right now we have a lot of eggs because I finally went and bought some from Karlie because we weren’t getting any of our own.

Looks like quiche is what’s for dinner tonight!

I love a good scary story. I just got shivers. I'm glad it didn't end with more evil chickens hatching and taking over the neighborhood.
