We were driving to my mom's house last night when out of the blue Audrey asked ElRey and I who we were voting for.
ElRey said: "Mitt Romney"
Audrey said: "No, for President-Barack Obama (siad very cutely but I can't duplicate) or John McCain?"
Mindi: "We will probably be voting for McCain just because he seems to have more of our same values."(Honestly, its been tough and I feel like we just have to choose between the lessor of to evils, so to speak)
Audrey: "McCain will save you money."
ElRey and Mindi's jaws drop and stare at each other...
ElRey: "What will Obama do?"
Audrey: "Obama will stop the war and all the bad people and put up a different flag"
Parental jaws dragging on the floor of the van, mom runs into Maverick for some happiness out of a fountain, returns. We talked about it a little more after that but she got that all from school. I think they had a lesson about democracy and voting for our leaders and one of the kids said that about the canidates. She didn't hear any of that from us. It was a profound moment and made me realize she is growing up and we should take more oppotunities to teach her these things. Regardless of what they say they will do, I don't think either of them know how to do what they claim they will. If a certain canidate wins I have a feeling that after we carry him down the mountain (this is a metaphor so stick with me) he will strick like a rattlesnake and as we lay dying we'll say "You promised you wouldn't bite" and he'll say "You knew what I was when you picked me up!" I won't mention any names but I just know we'll survive the next 4 years no matter who it is....I hope...
*Rattlesnake metaphor/parable/analogy from Boyd K. Packer-not about the canidates!:)

Mindi-It hurts my heart when you call McCain a snake. He's just an old man. WAY out of line. :)
I know, rude!
I don't like either one of them either but I will admit I would much prefer McCain over Obama. Obama is a good public speaker but he scares me. McCain doesn't exactly scare me in anyway but I don't agree on some aspects. I agree both make promises that they won't be able to keep but all presidential candidates are that way. Sigh...No offense but I think McCain can better handle the war. I don't think either one of them will be able to handle the economy well. I guess I looked at it this way. Which sounds better President McCain or President Obama. No offense President Obama just doesn't roll of the tongue as well as President McCain. LOL!
Sigh we have a long 4 years a head of us no matter who gets elected. Sigh...
And we thought MOBAMA almost got you. I don't know that I will ever understand the "values" reason for choosing McCain over Obama. McCain was married to a woman who waited for him during his time in Vietnam, and when he was in his forties hooked up with Cindy (in her twenties) at a military/political convention. I think that is the reason we all hate Clinton (can't stand the dork). Obama and McCain agree on opposing gay marriage. When it was brought up in the Palin Biden debate they agreed and moved on. I guess abortion would be the only issue. I'm pro-life, always have been always will be, but it seems that people confuse pro-choice with promoting abortion. All politicians say they want to decrease abortion. Pro-choicers think that promoting adoption, birth control, and planned parenting will be more effective then the pro-lifers who want to criminalize abortion. I don't agree with the pro-choicers, but I understand their reasoning. Most pro-lifers would make exceptions for people who have been raped or having the mothers life be at risk. If we make those exceptions, then everyone who wants an abortion just has to say they were raped. A bunch of Dr's will start to find many life-threatning reasons to abort. (Isn't just being pregnant life-threatening)Then if someone says they are raped or their life is in danger, we would have to have them prove that through the court system, which it is almost impossible to have a case go before a judge within nine months, so then we have to substantially increase funding for our court system etc. It's kind of a mess. Many people have made the lesser of two evils claim. I don't really agree with that because I think these are the two best choices we've had in a long time. (Bush I, Bush II, Clinton, Gore, Dole, Kerry) These are basically the best choices since Reagan. If we are evaluating the lesser of two evils, if someone in our church cheats on their wife, even after they have obtained full repentance they cannot become a bishop. You can become a bishop if you are pro-choice. Romney served as a Bishop in MA while running on a pro-choice ticket for Gov. and Sen. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_w9pquznG4) So I think Obama was the lesser of two evils. I guess this is just something that will always confuse me, I thought Obama would have done much better in Utah. But I think the Republican strong hold will stay for a while. Melissa's and my family are staunch republicans, I lean to the right on most issues but I think I'm fairly moderate. Anyways, heres an interesting article.

So Obama has a difficult path. It's up to us to oppose him when he's wrong. I'll be the first to disagree with him. Well, I guess it's good that it's over. Sorry about the long comment. I just don't know that I will ever understand the "values" thing. I thought Obama had McCain smoked on the values issue.
Well, that was just how I was explaining it to Audrey rather than bringing up abortion or socialist and patriotic and terrorist buddies (that one confuses me big time!) issues. I do agree with you, I'm not impressed with McCain's past with wife 1 and 2 but he even says he's not impressed with himself. I will support my president wholeheartedly and I have hope for the next few years but I still have a gnawing fear in my gut about him. Maybe it is merely because he is so radically different from what we have had recently, but its still there. And yes, they are much better choices than what we've had in the past but I just wish the primaries had gone differently, go Bro. Mitt, but here we are and I can only hope for the best! Good luck Obama! I still like the Mobama idea! That's the best one I've heard in a long time!
Thanks, I tend to piss people off, I'm glad I have Melissa to tell me to shut the heck up. It's good to see some people open to discussion.
