Family Night is the ‘Bomb’!!

Family Home Evening is the joke my Heavenly Father plays on me every week. Sometimes I bow out just so I am not the butt of the never ending joke. Our lessons very rarely last more than 7 minutes and even that is too long for some. Tonight was a real treat. We used Pres. Monson’s message in the Friend which was also used in sharing time yesterday. I like to try to connect our lessons with the ones they have in primary if I (rarely) think about it.

Audrey read the message with my (very little) help while Annie was ‘brushing’ her hair. ElRey thought he could sneak in and finish brushing her hair for her since her idea of brushing is completely different from ours. As Audrey was reading this is what she was competing with:

Annie: OWOWOWSTOPITSTOPITOW IDON’TLIKEYOUOWOWI’LLDOITMYSELF!!!!!!!!!

After Audrey finished reading her part I asked, “what did we just read?”

“I don’t know…”

So I retold the story of the firm foundation of the roads in Canada.

Annie: Where is Canada?

Mom: Above our country, The United States.”

Annie (pauses): “So Canada is heaven?”

Mom: “Close, but no.”

I then tried to relate those firm foundations to our own spiritual foundations and how we need to make them strong with prayer, scriptures, serving etc. I then told them that part of serving is listening at church and obeying parents and being nice to our sisters.

Annie: “Well Audrey was being mean in the bath! She tattle-telled!”

Mom(trying to ignore outburst and overwhelming desire to teach my kids some more swear words): Annie, you are really good at sharing and trying to make everyone around you happy!

Audrey, you are always really good at obeying and doing what you are told!”

Annie (screaming): “I TRY TO LISTEN!! But…but…WAAAAHAHHHHH

I. Am. Done.

Dad: “Who wants to pray?”

Audrey and Annie: “Me! No me! You got to pick the song!! I want to!! You read the lesson!!”

Dad:”Annie only picked the song so she can say the prayer.”

This is when I thought it would be a good idea to finish (yes, it’s still not done!!) brushing Annie’s hair and the screaming ensues…..

Mom: “Annie, I am done. Do you want to say the prayer?”

Annie(laced with anger): “No, you do it!!”

F.H.E. has a special place in my heart…

The Love of a “Woobie”

Linus - peanuts photo

I loved my woobie! I took it wherever I went. It was so much apart of me that my brother thought it was important to point out in every “Peanuts” book we had the strong resemblance I had to Linus (and apparently sometimes Lucy, you know, the bratty one). I remember watching the movie Mr. Mom and relating to the boy who loved his woobie and had a healthy fear of the vacuum. Those vacuums have no compassion for woobies, socks or dust bunnies. They still are very ruthless even if they look prettier these days.

My trusty pink gingham sidekick (and my prema-pruned thumb) got me through many tears, torturous brothers, bad dreams and wet beds. I remember the joys that the lack of nighttime control brought me in my childhood. I would wake up wet, be afraid to tell my mom (which I COMPLETELY understand her side now but at the time I thought she had something in common with The Tin man of Oz), change my clothes and lay on the heater vent with my woobie while I waited for the sun to rise.

I made Audrey a blanket before she was born that I thought for sure would be her own woobie. She loved it but she didn’t LLLOOOOOVVEEE it like you do a true woobie. She has never really been attached to anything that I could say was her security object.

Annie’s “woobie” is anyone that will snuggle with her. She has a hard time sleeping by herself. In fact, she was out of her crib and in Audrey’s bed much earlier than I would have wanted her to be. She would just stand in her crib and cry reaching out for Audrey. We now sleep with our door locked because if we don’t we wake up with a foot in the crotch or a slap from a cute little hand in our face.

Then we have Lilykins. She and I totally get each other! She has her little shiny blanky and her perma-pruned thumb-there was a time that she had a big sore on the tip of her thumb from sucking on it so much! Anytime she is sad, just find her woobie and all will be well! Give her a bean bag, a Sippy AND her woobie, well, nothing could be better!

I still have that blanket tucked away in storage. If it wasn’t buried in the back I would probably dig it out and sleep with it. But in my adulthood I have discovered new addictions *ahem* “woobies”  that make me feel safe and secure. It seems that no matter our age we all need that something to hold on to at night that scares away all the monsters. The monsters have change and so have the woobies but the fear or need for comfort will never change. Hopefully the woobies, stuffed animals or thumbs we have chosen in our adulthood are relatively harmless and bring us the little comfort we need to get by.

Why staying up late is bad: Reason #437

I have had a real issue with getting to bed at a decent time each night. I can’t really explain why I do it but I cannot get myself to go to bed when I should. I’ve got a stack of books to read, blogs to look at, shows to watch and I find it’s easiest to do these things when everyone is sleeping. Less guilt and zero interruptions. I also find waking up to be physically painful so somewhere among the cobwebs of my brain, it makes sense to just not sleep…

The other night on my second attempt to fall asleep, I was laying in bed listening to the Man of My Dreams sleep when I started thinking about my chickens. We will be introducing the younger ones to the older ones soon and I was wondering how that would go. I then thought, how do chickens find out about laying eggs? Is it instinctual or do they need to be taught by the older, wiser hens what to expect? What if one day they just have a stomach ache and they don’t know why but they really want to eat a whole pan of brownies. Who helps them through this life changing rite of passage?

I then had a vision of Gabriella and Chicken sitting on their roost with 4 young hens sitting around them waiting for ‘The Talk’. This is how it went:

G&C: Bok bok bok bok bok ba-bok bok bok.

4 Young chickens fidget uncomfortably, not making eye contact with anyone.

G&C: Bok bok bok bok (squats) BAAAGOK bok bok bok.

4YC(stunned and slightly queasy): BOK. BOK. BOK.

G&C: Bok.

None of the chickens make eye contact for days and the young chickens don’t sleep for weeks…waiting for that dreadful day…

Moral of the story? Invest in Ambien.

Self Reliance Totally Rocks!

Many people fill up their pantries with canned goods, wheat and water. My wicked awesome friend Karlie just learned how to not only can BUTTER but how to wax her cheese (no pun intended-I am hard pressed to find one, actually, but that phrase sounded odd so if you figure one out please share!!)!! She now has cheese that can sit in her basement for years and still be good! That girl amazes me!!! I’m pretty sure her next project is to can her kids in their cutest stages so they won’t grow up. If anyone notices her loading up on formaldehyde-please let the bishop know!

Sorry, I digress…

While I know that these things are all well and good, I have a few of these items myself, I think I figured out another way to be self reliant and create a food storage:

Meet KFC, Chic-Fil-A, and Buffalo Wings!IMG_0802

We bought these little hotties back in March when we didn’t yet know any better being head over chicken feet in love with Gaby and Chicken.

Those cute little fur balls now look like this:

They also went from a Rubbermaid tub to this:

ElRey’s cousin, Del, offered this sweet condo up for our chicks! Thanks, man! They are now living in the lap of luxury!

Aaaannnd, we will soon be adopting ANOTHER one from my pal Rikke! In a few months I can pay my Fast Offerings with eggs and if we get in a pinch, give a chicken for our Tithing!

I am sooo on to something here!!!

I Will Survive! Hopefully my kids will, too!

It has been a rough week! I haven’t written or done much because I felt like I had nothing good to say or contribute to anyone! I feel like I have been in a constant battle with my children and myself all week.

When Audrey was just a baby I was leaving my parents house when their neighbor stopped by to see how I was. He asked me how I liked being a parent and I told him it’s a joy about 80% of the time with a big smile on my face (keep in mind, Audrey was months old and my only child). He responded with, “Really?! For me it’s about 40%! You must be doing something right!” I felt so bad for him! Granted, I grew up with his children and I could see where he was coming from!

Years and more children later, my ratio has changed. It averages out to about 50/50 and I might say that is a high average. This parenting business is not for the weak of heart and I wish I understood that better before I started! But we never do. Don’t get me wrong-I wouldn’t change what I am doing for anything! I am right where I want to be it’s just not all fun and games!

I think of my mom, who is up on my list of the best people in the whole world and I know she had struggles as a young mom and she probably didn’t always handle every situation perfectly. But she is so much more than I will ever be! She is constantly putting everyone before herself! She takes care of everyone’s needs, is always there to listen, to make you laugh, to give support or even just give you money if she has it to give. Compared to her, I am the most selfish, mediocre and dried up soul on the planet! I wish I could be more than I am but I get in my own way all the time!

The other night I found myself in the middle of the kitchen sobbing uncontrollably because I knew if I went downstairs to my crying daughter I would do something I could never take back and would regret till the end of eternity. I was shaking with anger and shame and it was all I could do to just stay put and let her cry it out. All I could think was why on earth did I think I would be a good mother??? I felt like a monster because of the thoughts that were going through my mind.

How could someone so little, beautiful and special turn me into a monster? How can someone who makes me smile and laugh out loud sometimes bring the worst out in me that I didn’t even know was in me? How could there be room in my body for all the love I have for her AND all the hate and anger that will flash for mere minutes?

Never in all my life have I been in any kind of relationship that caused so much love and turmoil. I am now experiencing that with my children and it is exhausting. I’ve never loved anyone so much and so unconditionally in my life. And yet, I have never been so hurt and angered by someone either! What a walking contradiction I have become!

I have been so hurt and tortured by my own shame since that night that I haven’t had much energy for anything else. I have been disgusted with myself for how I have felt about this whole ‘mom thing’ (do I even deserve the title of mom???). Last night I had trouble sleeping so I pulled out my scriptures, thinking of women in the scriptures when I immediately thought of the woman with the ‘issue of blood’ who touched the hem of Christ’s robe and was healed. When Jesus realized someone had touched him she confessed that she touched his clothes and was healed. I can feel His compassion when he says to her: “Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.”(Luke 8:48)

No matter our diseased state, spiritual or physical, Christ can heal us. Through our faith that tomorrow is another day, this too shall pass, or I know I can do better we can have the strength to get through anything! I know that He can make up the difference for me when I do wrong-which is often! Just reading His words changed my heart. It stopped hurting and I felt His forgiving love. I truly felt at peace.

That awful night I thought of mothers who couldn’t take it anymore and left their children through whatever means they felt necessary. I can totally understand how someone could get to that point. The one thing I kept thinking that night was, “I’m here. I’m here. I’m still here.”

I realize that this is a process. I know that while I sit here and put my own mother up on a pedestal, she was once here, feeling inadequate. I know that I will learn to be more patient as we all grow together and one day this will be a silly little memory if not all but forgotten. It doesn’t make it less real but it does make it a stepping stone to the (fingers crossed) pedestal my girls may one day put me on as their example of a loving mother.

This will never be easy. There will always be challenges and I am sure there will be many more nights of tears and sorrow. But there will always be just as much if not more joys and laughter. My children may need a lot of therapy to cope with their mom’s mistakes and outburst but the one thing they will always know is that although imperfect I may be,

I’m here. I am still here.
